The Concept of the Mask

no one seems to grasp the concept of the mask

extras:

  1. Evey: Who -- Who are you?
  2. V: Voila! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V. And you would be?

  1. V: There are no coincidences, only the illusion of coincidences.

  1. V: There is no certainty, only opportunity.

  1. Evey: My father was a writer. You would've liked him. He used to say that artists use lies to tell the truth, while politicians use them to cover the truth up.

  1. Creedy: Die! Die! Why won't you die?
  2. V: Beneath this mask there is more than flesh Mr Creedy.
  3. V: Beneath this mask there is an idea. And ideas are bulletproof.

  1. Deitrich: You wear a mask for so long you forget who you were beneath it.

Faithful Man and Useful Servant of God

well, that's my motto. and my fav quote is this : It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me. And what I do in life, echoes in eternity. And, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Where did I get that? Actually I can't remember till I watch The 13th Warrior, again.
  • Across seas of monsters and forests of demons we traveled. Praise be to Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate. May His blessing be upon Pagan Men: Who loved other Gods, who shared their food, and shed their blood. That his servant, Ahmed ibn Fahdlan, might become a man, and a useful servant of God.

"A FAITHFUL PERSON is trustworthy and reliable. Some people make faithfulness a hallmark of their human relationships, but the faithfulness that matters most is the faithfulness we show towards God."

Many people, and my guess, Most People, will interpret FAITHFUL as being honest in relationship. That is not wrong. However, there is more to it. Faithful here comes from the word FAITH. In Malay we call it IMAN, and faithful means BERIMAN. Faithful man is a man who obey his God, any time, any place, any situation. That is what I mean by faithful man. Between man and his God.

And Useful Servant of God.
People will easily interpret this as being a pious and religious man. Someone who always fulfill his obligation to God, and make ibadat a lot. But as always, I like to twist the mind of others, to squeeze their brains, to mock their simple and streamlined thinking.

But no, what I mean here is, someone who is useful to other mankind. To his society. Servant of God simply means that he is a humble people, he is, after all, even if he did GREAT service, just a servant of God. He can the minister or king, or public worker, or anyone, but he need to offer his service to make him useful to others.
Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): “I am only a man”

Now I know my English is terrible. Let me go back to the purpose of this post.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ah yes, the quotes from The 13th Warrior!

Lo there do I see my father, Lo there do I see my mother, my Sisters and my brothers , Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call me, they bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.

  • Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things. This was not among them. But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well. For all we ought to have thought, and have not thought; all we ought to have said, and have not said; all we ought to have done, and have not done; I pray thee God for forgiveness.
  • The All-Father wove the skein of your life a long time ago. Go and hide in a hole if you wish, but you won't live one instant longer. Your fate is fixed. Fear profits a man nothing.

Buliwyf: You can draw sounds?
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: "Draw sounds"? Yes, I can draw sounds... and I can speak them back.
Buliwyf: Show me.
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan(writing in the dirt) There is only one God, and Mohammad is his prophet.

Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan(Ahmed is given a Viking sword) I cannot lift this.
Herger the Joyous: Grow stronger!

[Herger kills one of the Prince's henchmen in a sham duel]
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: You! You could have killed him at will!
Herger the Joyous: Yes?
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: Well, why the deception?
Herger the Joyous: Deception is the point! Any fool can calculate strength. That one has been doing it since we arrived. Now he has to calculate what he can't see.
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: And fear... what he doesn't know. [Herger makes a head-smacking gesture]
Buliwyf: As you say, foolish. And expensive. We will miss Angus tonight; we will miss his sword.

Buliwyf: I have only these hands. I will die a pauper.
King Hrothgar: You will be buried as a king.
Buliwyf: A man might be thought wealthy if someone were to...draw the story of his deeds, that they may be remembered.
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: Such a man might be thought wealthy indeed.

Find God

"kalau engkau mencari, Tuhan pun akan kau temui"
(I guess this could work with Perjalanan ke Utara)

You uttered beautiful saying, but.
You are not actually that great. You just copy ideas from here and there.

Yes, I read a lot, that is why I am wiser than you and able to say pretty words, unlike you.

Awang worked for some time for somebody and was promised a reward, but Awang forgot or intentionally forgot to take his salary. His employer invested his salary and basically it grows. Awang came back much later only to be told his mere salary has been turned to real estate.

Quote on Swords

SWORDS - GENERAL

A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer's hand.

Their sword will become our plow, and from the tears of war the daily bread of future generations will grow.

There are two powers in the world; one is the sword and the other is the pen. There is a great competition and rivalry between the two. There is a third power stronger than both, that of the women.

Shields were generally made of wood, covered with leather, or some similar substance. To secure them, in some sort, from being cut through by the sword, they were surrounded with a hoop of metal.

A sword, a spade, and a thought should never be allowed to rust.

Caesar had perished from the world of men, had not his sword been rescued by his pen.

Don't leave home without your sword - your intellect.

I am not afraid of the pen, or the scaffold, or the sword. I will tell the truth wherever I please.
I wear my Pen as others do their Sword.

Indulge not thyself in the passion of anger; it is whetting a sword to wound thine own breast, or murder thy friend.

Never give a sword to a man who can't dance. Confucius

The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.

The sword conquered for a while, but the spirit conquers for ever!

SWORDS – GOOD

A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer's hand.

And each man stands with his face in the light. Of his own drawn sword, ready to do what a hero can.

No one need think that the world can be ruled without blood. The civil sword shall and must be red and bloody.

The sword is the axis of the world and its power is absolute.

He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword

SWORDS – BAD

There are only two forces in the world, the sword and the spirit. In the long run the sword will always be conquered by the spirit.

At all events, arbitration is more rational, just, and humane than the resort to the sword.

A good sword is the one left in its scabbard.

Beneath the rule of men entirely great, the pen is mightier than the sword.

Disarm, disarm. The sword of murder is not the balance of justice. Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.

The longest sword, the strongest lungs, the most voices, are false measures of truth.

Quote : V For Vendetta

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/quotes

Evey Hammond: [voiceover] Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot... But what of the man? I know his name was Guy Fawkes and I know, in 1605, he attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. But who was he really? What was he like? We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. I've witnessed first hand the power of ideas, I've seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them... but you cannot kiss an idea, cannot touch it, or hold it... ideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not love... And it is not an idea that I miss, it is a man... A man that made me remember the Fifth of November. A man that I will never forget.

Evey Hammond: [reads] Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici.
V: [translates] By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Evey Hammond: Is everything a joke to you, Gordon?
Gordon Deitrich: Only the things that matter.

Gordon Deitrich: You wear a mask for so long, you forget who you were beneath it.

Dominic: What do you think will happen?
Finch: What usually happens when people without guns stand up to people *with* guns.

Evey Hammond: No one will ever forget that night and what it meant for this country. But I will never forget the man and what he meant to me.

V: The time has come for me to meet my maker and to repay him in kind for all that he's done.

[after a hail of gunfire doesn't stop V]
Creedy: Die! Die! Why won't you die?... Why won't you die?
V: Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

V: And thus I clothe my naked villainy / With old odd ends stolen forth from holy writ/And seem a saint when most I play the devil.
[quoting Shakespeare's Richard III, Act I Scene 3]

Evey Hammond: Who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what, and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Evey Hammond: God is in the rain...

Evey Hammond: I don't want you to die.
V: That's the most beautiful thing you could have ever given me.

V: People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

Evey Hammond: I don't even know what you really look like.
[Evey tries to remove V's mask]
V: [V stops her] Evey, please. There is a face beneath this mask but it's not me. I'm no more that face than I am the muscles beneath it or the bones beneath them.
Evey Hammond: I understand.
V: Thank you.

No Mask Like Open Truth

No mask like open truth to cover lies, as to go naked is the best disguise.

So I was looking for something on Google to support my theory of 'the best way to cover the truth'. And I found the above quote. Another search led me here.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Truth

In my story, the main character is trying to hide his own great power and skill by talking big, making everyone to ignore him or not believing in his every claim. In my opinion, some truth are best spoken to cover it.

No mask like open truth to cover lies,
As to go naked is the best disguise.
William Congreve, in "The Double Dealer"

I know that's a secret, for it's whispered everywhere.
William Congreve, in "Love for Love"

Well I got sidetracked for an hour searching for supporting sites or articles but to no avail. However this is the concept that I want to include in my story. Light and darkness, truth and lies and deception.
